Prime Minister Hon. Phillip J. Pierre took to his Facebook account to congratulate Saint Lucian cricketer Johnson Charles, who broke records on Sunday March 26th, 2023.
“Congratulations Johnson Charles on your first stunning 100 runs in T20I cricket, the fastest in West Indies T20I history. 118 runs! You have made us proud and continue to inspire young sportsmen and women. What a lovely day for cricket and the West Indies.” he wrote.
Johnson Charles registered the joint third-fastest century in T20I history as West Indies piled up 258/5 against South Africa in the second T20I at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.
Charles achieved 118 off just 46 balls, smashing 11 sixes and 10 fours as he surpassed Chris Gayle to become the West Indies’ fastest centurion in the game’s shortest format.
Charles reached triple figures in 39 balls while Gayle had achieved the same feat in 47 deliveries.
“The shot that brought up the hundred was special. Being able to hit a six over cover is not easy to play, but it felt really good being that it brought up the landmark, something which I will cherish.” Charles told reporters.
