House Passes Bill to Establish Julien Alfred Day

The House of Assembly considered the Julien Alfred Day Bill today, proposing a public holiday to honor the Olympian.

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre highlighted Julien Alfred’s gold and silver medals at the 2024 Olympics, describing her achievements as a source of pride for Saint Lucia and the Caribbean. He praised her discipline, noting her remarkable 100m time of 10.72 seconds.

A committee chaired by the Ministers of Sport and Tourism will organize events to celebrate Alfred’s return on September 24, culminating in activities throughout the week. Pierre proposed September 27 as Julien Alfred Day, with public offices and banks closing in observance. He also suggested amending the bill to allow flexibility in recognizing other national athletes.

Members of the House chimed in with respective concerns and endorsements:

Choiseul MP Bradley Felix expressed pride but raised concerns about flag consistency and the national anthem’s performance at international events. He also noted the lack of formal invitations to the opposition for the celebrations.

Castries North MP Richard Frederick endorsed the bill, clarifying that no government members had received invitations for Julien Alfred Day.

Dennery North MP Shawn Edward emphasized Alfred’s role in putting people first and her demonstration of Saint Lucia’s talent. He supported the closure of businesses to honor her achievements.

Micoud South MP praised Alfred’s dedication, recognizing her upbringing and the support she received. He expressed hope that her legacy would inspire future generations.

Pierre thanked the Ministers for their support and promised further announcements regarding the celebration. The bill passed unanimously.
