Julien Alfred Ends Season with Diamond League Triumph

Saint Lucians have much to celebrate as they anticipate the homecoming of Paris Olympic and Diamond League 100-meter champion Julien Alfred.

The 23-year-old dominated the Diamond League final held at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Friday, September 13, 2024. In particular, competing in lane 5, Alfred clocked 10.88 seconds, replicating her impressive time from Zurich on September 5.

Meanwhile, close competitors included Dina Asher-Smith of the UK, who finished second with a time of 10.92 seconds, and Marie Jose Ta Lou of Ivory Coast, who came in third at 11.05 seconds. However, Sha’Carri Richardson of the U.S., a favorite in the race, eased off before the finish line and placed eighth in the nine-woman field with a time of 11.23 seconds.

In response, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre praised Alfred’s performance, stating, “Join me in congratulating Olympic Champion, Julien Alfred on capturing 1st Place in the Women’s 100m Wanda Diamond League Finals in Brussels with a time of 10.88 seconds. We are immensely proud of you and can’t wait to welcome you back to celebrate your achievements.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports also congratulated Alfred on her victory. The ministry looks forward to her arrival in Saint Lucia on Tuesday, September 24, to celebrate her success.
