Government Reveals First Time CPEA Results Today

Earlier today, the Ministry of Education revealed the results of Saint Lucia’s first CPEA (Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment) at the Saint Mary’s College, where the scores ranged from 97.2% – 22.5%.

The CPEA was introduced to give students a combined grade of 40% of continuous assessment and 60% of an examination to determine their overall grade as they transitioned from the Common Entrance Examination, usually slated for Grade 6 students.

Hon. Shawn Edward, Minister for Education remarked that, “We have been able to continuously monitor the competence of our students. Schools have been able to reduce learning gaps and ensure mastery of skills. He continued, “The introduction of an internal and external component, necessitates collaboration among student, teachers and parents.”

The Minister continued that the assessment and exam combination has the potential to measure skills and aptitude of students to promote a culture of inclusion. He further added that the results will prove that the performance of Saint Lucian students are at the same level with students across the region. The Minister said that although the processes need to be strenthened, he holds the firm view that embracing the CPEA was the best assessment approach for Grade 6 students.

It should be noted that the top 10 students came from 7 different schools and the top 5 students in this year’s exam are all boys.
