2023 George F.L. Charles Foundation Memorial May Day Lecture To Be Presented By Former Trade Unionist Dr. Henry Charles

CASTRIES – Former Trade Unionist and General Secretary of the Saint Lucia Civil Service Association, Dr. Henry Charles is set to feature as the 2023 Memorial May Day Guest Lecturer, to be hosted by the George F. L. Charles Foundation. The Memorial May Day Lecture series is returning after a three-year break caused by COVID-19.

Dr. Charles is the holder of a Ph.D. in Social Policy. He has worked extensively in the area of youth development at regional and international levels. He is well-versed in areas of strategic leadership, innovation, youth development initiatives and trade union activities. He was the lead consultant for the Caribbean Development Bank’s first Youth Policy Operational Strategy.

The Lecture is slated for Tuesday, May 2nd, at the Conference Room of the Financial Administrative Center at Pointe Seraphine starting at 7pm.  This year’s lecture will focus on the topic: “Conversations on a shared Development Agenda for Saint Lucia, while Optimizing the Role of the Labour Movement.”

This Foundation is named after Saint Lucia’s first Chief Minister, Sir George F.L Charles, who was also one of Saint Lucia’s earliest Trade Union leaders and who is credited as the one who led the fight for adult suffrage, which for the first time in 1951, gave the right to vote to all Saint Lucians regardless of colour or social status.

Among the objectives of the foundation are: 

To undertake research to document and disseminate information relating to the understanding of the impact of political philosophy, economics, culture and other influences on the development of Saint Lucia

To influence decision makers in pursuing policies designed to achieve the maximum development of the human potential of Saint Lucians both at home and abroad

Invitations are extended to members of the Trade Union movement, civil society organizations and the public in general.
