Following the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force launch of the new 5-5-5 crime hotline, which urges the public to call with information that helps the force solve crime. SDA Mission Family Life Director Pastor Caius Alfred says the initiative needs improvement to protect the identity of informants.
The Pastor says following the trend of other countries would be best by having the calls rerouted so that communication isn’t directly with the police.
He says there needs to be a third party involved to be safe.
Alfred says he and his team of crime reduction specialists have been on the ground in Vieux Fort in an effort to engage young people away from crime.
“I think the hotline is good but I would have preferred that .. based on the complaints I hear in the community I would have preferred that these calls are not calls that are routed from Saint Lucia to the police but I would have preferred a third party to be involved, so that call is rerouted to the police rather than directly to the police.” he shared.
The new hotline was recently launched by the Royal Saint Lucia Police force, Commissioner Crusita Descarte Pelius disclosed that persons are able to provide the persons with information while keeping their identities anonymous. She says a code will be used in efforts to keep the identity of persons unknown and to also attain their compensation without the direct involvement of the police.
