Minister for Education Hon. Shawn Edward has contracted Ausbert Regis, former police commissioner as the school security expert, to address safety concerns at schools.
The minister says this is not a response to the recent gang violence in Vieux Fort and that school security had been a discussion for a long time within the administration.
“We have contracted Mr. Ausbert Regis former police commissioner who’s a security expert, he is now part of our staff at the ministry of education. And this is not a response to what happened in Vieux Fort two weekends ago, but for a long time we have been speaking about school security.” he said.
He disclosed that Ausbert Regis’s duties will include working alongside existing security personnel to review the current system of security at schools.
“His responsibility really is to work with existing security personnel in education to see how best we can bolster our own security apparatus.” he continued.
Hon. Shawn Edward says he intends on working collaboratively with the police and other national agencies to look beyond the current calmness and ensure that school environments maintain the calmness.
“The situation is under control as we speak but I would’ve also said that working collaboratively with the police and other national agencies we are looking beyond the calm that currently exists to ensure we roll out programs and we have plans that will create that environment on a long term basis.” he shared.
Ausbert Regis will be contracted for an initial six months.
