Earlier today, Senator Lisa Jawahir, Communications Director for the SLP wrote on her Facebook page, condemning personal attacks on persons who protest against the government. She said, “The Saint Lucia Labour Party will, in no way, condemn anyone who is exercising their constitutional right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression.” She was referring to the situation where a well-known Anse La Raye social issues advocate stood outside of Parliament on Tuesday this week asking for neglect of the constituency to end.
She continued, “Our Party is one that was built on democracy. We uphold our constitution, which guards those same rights and so, we must allow people to express themselves freely and in a safe manner. That said, we take this opportunity to encourage anyone reading this post to refrain from personal attacks on individuals who are simply exercising their constitutional rights.” She went on to remind the public of what she claimed to be deeds going against the constitution by the previous UWP administration, “Remember, the United Workers Party blatantly disrespected our Constitution in many ways including not appointing a Deputy Speaker for five (5) years. We will never follow that direction. What we must do is take any criticism of our Party and adjust accordingly.“
End.
