Women’s Support Centre Empty!

Hon. Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte believes that underreporting may be a major contributor to an empty Women’s Support Centre and not necessarily a reduction in domestic violence cases.

While domestic violence continues in Saint Lucia, it is believed that many are not aware of their rights or actions that could be taken to curb these acts against partners in the home. The Government of Saint Lucia has passed the Domestic Violence Bill, which aims to do just that.

The Gender Relations Minister, when interviewed on Monday, believes that the Domestic Violence Bill was a major step in the right direction, but a comprehensive education drive is needed to bring about a turnaround in toxic behaviour. “We have to engage the justice system, the Ministry of Health and the police so that they understand the new approach in dealing with domestic violence.” she said.

The Domestic Violence Bill was finally passed earlier this year, after nearly three decades of being in the consultation stage. The Minister has stated that her Ministry looks forward to active engagement with the public, to create awareness and educate on the new bill.
