Senator Jawahir In Full Support of Sex Offenders’ Registry

In an interview on a local talk show earlier today, Senator Lisa C. Jawahir stated that if this is what it takes to eliminate rape in Saint Lucia, she would be in full support of a sex offenders’ registry.

As a Gender Champion of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and a member of the Upper House, Sen. Jawahir stated that her role is to advocate for equality for not just women but men however, women as a vulnerable group, are high targets for rape acts. She continued to state her opinion that it has been decades where activists have been advocating for rapists to be held accountable for their actions.

She spoke of the recent spade of violent crimes against women including persons who did not survive rape and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

Senator Jawahir has called on human rights activists to tell the population why they are opposed to a sex offenders’ registry as “it is not until it hits home, when we Saint Lucians will truly understand the magnitude of this issue.” She also calls upon the public to support the efforts of the police to bring perpetrators to justice.
