Cruscita Descartes-Pelius, Saint Lucia’s first female Commissioner of Police, retires after a tenure marked by efforts to combat lawlessness.
Appointed in 2022, Descartes-Pelius brought 34 years of service experience to the role, which included several leadership positions within the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), making history as first female Commissioner of Police, nearly 200 years after the RSLPF was established in 1834. Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced her appointment, citing her 34 years of service and extensive training as essential for leading the force amid rising security threats, particularly gun violence after her years of service.
Descartes Pelius joined the RSLPF in 1988, rising through the ranks to become Superintendent in 2015. Before her promotion to Commissioner, she served as Assistant Commissioner responsible for Corporate Services and Strategic Operations. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Studies from The University of the West Indies.
Her appointment marked a significant milestone, though she faced skepticism about her ability to lead. Critics expressed concerns on social media and local radio shows, questioning whether she could command respect and effectively address crime.
Despite the challenges, Descartes-Pelius remained committed to her role, stating that her mandate included providing leadership training for senior officers. Reflecting on her tenure, she emphasized her efforts to develop leaders within the force.
When asked about extending her contract, Descartes-Pelius declined to comment, leaving uncertainty about her future. However, as Prime Minister Pierre noted, her appointment represented a historic moment for women in leadership. The focus now shifts to her successor and whether they will meet or exceed expectations.
