WATCH: Verne Garde Named Acting Police Commissioner

Saint Lucia’s Acting Governor General has appointed Verne Garde as the Acting Police Commissioner. Garde’s appointment follows the advice of the Public Service Commission.

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced the appointment, which took effect Monday, on a six-month contract. Speaking of the short-term contract, Pierre stated that the position needs careful scrutiny, before a decision [to extend] is made.

Garde previously served twice as Director of Corrections at Bordelais Correctional Facility and led the Special Branch Unit of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF). Pierre praised Garde’s experience, emphasizing his leadership in law enforcement and his previous roles in managing police stations across the island.

Pierre highlighted Garde’s extensive training in areas like drug enforcement, narcotics intelligence, and leadership. Garde holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement and Administration and has been recognized for his service by U.S. and U.K. agencies.

Garde replaces Cruscita Descartes-Pelius, whose tenure as the first female Police Commissioner ended Saturday. Pierre thanked her for her service and noted that officers have pledged their support for Garde.
