Advocate Urges Continuous Child Supervision After Fatal Fire

A recent house fire that claimed the life of a three-year-old has highlighted the urgent need for greater vigilance in achild supervision. Felicia Dujon, a well-known human rights advocate, strressed the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children in a public statement.

“My heart goes out to the grieving parents and loved ones,” Dujon said in a statement. “We cannot continue to believe that children can take care of themselvs when we leave them alone at such tender ages .It is egregious and inconceivable to do so, even if it is for a short errand. Anything can happen; we must make a greater effort to protect our children at all costs.”

Reports indicate the toddler was asleep at the time of the fire, under the care of relatives. The Micoud Fire Service responded but found the home fully engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the fire, they discovered the child’s remains in the debris.

Dujon urged that this tragic event should serve as a critical reminder that cultural practices must not override the essential need for proper child supervision. She referenced St Lucia’s Child Protection Act, which requires children be shielded and harm under Section 17.

The St Lucia Fire Service and the Royal St Lucia Police Force are conducting investigations into the incident.
