Suspension of Educational Instruction And Closure Of Schools Due To Tropical Storm Bret

The Department of Education announced that on Thursday, June 22, 2023, all educational instruction will be suspended and schools will remain closed.

This decision was taken in light of the impending passage of Tropical Storm Bret which is expected to make landfall by Thursday at 8:00 am.

The Department of Education trusts that all necessary pre-disaster activities would have taken place, including plans for possible preoccupation of school compounds for emergency shelter.

The public is urged to pay attention to information forecasts from the Saint Lucia Meteorological Service and remain safe.

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) has issued disaster preparedness tips to the public.

Preparation can include:

  • The compilation or assembling of disaster kits which will have medicines and prescriptions, important documents should be stored in plastic bags or airtight containers.
  • Know family plans, develop a family plan and ensure that everybody knows what the plan is.
  • Make an evacuation plan if you do not have one. Ensure that your family is aware of routes to be taken for safety.
  • Know the emergency shelters in your communities.
  • Trim overhanging trees and branches.
  • Clear drains near your homes and also your gutterings.
  • Ensure that mobiles are fully charged.

NEMO wishes to remind the public that it is important to listen to official sources of information from the Government of Saint Lucia, NEMO and the Saint Lucia Met Services.
