“Be On The Alert!” RSLPF Issues Warning For Car Scams

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is urging the public to be on alert for car scams.

Inspector in charge of CID, Castries Shervon Matthieu says the RSLPF has received numerous reports of a new scam that is targeted at persons in search of vehicles to purchase via the social platform Facebook.

“The scam involves the following steps, the scammer posts an advertisement for a vehicle via Facebook using stolen photos and fake details then you’ll be given a phone number and asked to contact this person to arrange some sort of meeting. The scammer also asks you to ensure that you carry along with you cash as that vehicle has multiple buyers and will be sold if it’s not purchased. You are then asked to meet at a private location where you will meet up with an individual that will ask you for the money and hand you a vehicle key and instruct you to go to a different location to collect the said vehicle.” he warns.

Matthieu says perpetrators of this scam will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” he added.

Persons who suspect any suspicious advertisements or transactions should make a report to the crime hotline 555.
