At a press conference held on Wednesday 17th May, 2023 opposition leader Allen Chastanet spoke on what he says was a win for democracy after his court hearing against the Speaker of The House Claudius Francis.
At the hearing, it was concluded that Chastanet will return to the next and any subsequent sittings of the house.
Allen Chastanet says he will be walking to the next house sitting which is expected to be scheduled for Tuesday 23rd May, 2023 and urges his party supporters to walk with him in what he calls a walk of celebration.
“I’m expecting that parliament is going to be on Tuesday, and I’ve made the decision to walk from here to parliament on Tuesday and all those persons who truly recognized the victory was theirs I’m asking them to join me. And we walk, not protest but we walk in celebration of what we’ve accomplished recently.” the Micoud South MP said.
The leader says the voice of the people is needed to cause the speaker of the house to resign as he has shown he has no intentions to do it on his own.
“It’s going to take the people’s voice to answer your question, to cause Claudius Francis to resign. He’s not going to do it, he’s shown he’s not going to put country above self.” he added.
He says the parliamentarians’ vote that is needed to fire the speaker will not do so and thus the voice of the people is the only solution to show the speaker that he needs to go.
“The parliamentarians whose vote you will need to fire him are not because they’ve shown they’re going to put party above country and so it’s for the people of the country, the people’s parliament to show him that he needs to go and if we don’t he won’t.” Chastanet says.
