“Legislation is not the solution.” Says Human Rights Attorney, Martinus Francois

Human Rights Attorney Martinus Francois, says he disagrees with statements made by the Vieux Fort South parliamentary representative Dr. Kenny Anthony asking to grant the police more powers.

Francois says legislation is not the solution to the current situation of crime in Vieux Fort.

“They got their priorities very wrong you know, legislation will not do anything to crime.” he says.

The attorney says he believes the solution to the spike in crime and violence is social reengineering to help people in the community of Vieux Fort and by extension Saint Lucia.

“These people have been living in poverty for ages and government after government they have done nothing to help the people, the young people especially. So more legislation is just a waste of time.” he continued.

In reference to a legislation which was passed for the control of illegal fire arms, Francois says the new legislation did nothing to curb gun violence in Vieux Fort and instead resulted in the loss of many lives.

He says the government needs to go back to the drawing board to come up with better solutions.
