SLP Calls For Removal Of Marcella Johnson From The Public Service Commission

The Saint Lucia Labor Party is calling on the government to demand the resignation of Marcella Johnson, a member of the Public Service Commission (PSC) who has been elected to the position of Treasurer of the United Workers Party, at its convention held in Micoud South on Sunday 12th March 2023.

The Public Service Commission was created under section 85 of the constitution of Saint Lucia, which states:

There shall be a Public Service Commission for Saint Lucia …which shall consist of a chairperson and not less than 2 nor more than 4 other members, who shall be appointed by the Governor General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister.”

The party states “due to the public expectation that the Public Service Commission will act impartially without political interference; and because all persons who will be subjected to the decisions of the PSC, regardless of political affiliation, must be able to trust that they will be treated fairly in the decisions of the Commission, the continued presence of Marcella Johnson on the PSC will, without doubt, undermine the good conduct of the Commission and reduce public confidence in its decisions.”

“Having considered the seriousness of the issues arising from a top member of the Executive of a political party, having membership in such a critical institution of our constitution, the Saint Lucia Labor Party calls on Marcella Johnson to remove herself from the PSC. If she fails to do so, the SLP calls on the government to demand her resignation.”
