At a media briefing prior to the start of Cabinet this morning, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and Minister for Finance, has announced that the St. Jude Reconstruction project will begin in November of this year.
When the SLP Administration took office in 2021, a committee was appointed to review the current status of the St. Jude Hospital. The committee consisted of professionals, architects, engineers and medical professionals to advise Cabinet on the way forward.
In 2016, the St. Jude Hospital project was stopped by the UWP administration, which was 80% completed, according to reports. Three years later, another building was constructed, which was at 30% completion, a cost of over $100 million by the time the next General Elections was called.
According to Prime Minister Pierre, the committee advised that construction should continue on the original building and he has announced the start of the reconstruction for November 2022, where Phase 1 will consist of works such as fencing of the original site and other exterior works.
This news comes right after the 13th anniversary of the St. Jude fire, which was on September 9th, 2009.
