Customs Department to Harness Technology in Preventing Arms Trafficking

Our role in protecting society from illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons and narcotics cannot be overstated,” remarked Customs Comptroller, Sherman Emmanuel.

As the world’s eyes were glued on customs and border control personnel in commemoration of International Customs Day, Emmanuel reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to protecting citizens. This year, Emmanuel says, the Department will implement new measures to ensure resources are focused more effectively on high-risk targets.

This year, my Department plans to improve our risk management posture through innovation by utilising automation to improve our risk assessment. This will reduce the volume of examinations of low-risk consignments while targeting higher-risk consignments,” he explained in a statement.

To achieve this goal, the Comptroller says the Department will make effective use of technology. “As the gateway for international trade, we must harness the power of technology and innovation to streamline our processes,” he said.

The current spate of violent gun crime is being fuelled by illegal arms being imported through illegal channels. In recent years, Customs has seized numerous firearms coming into the country hidden in barrels. The public has placed increased pressure on the Department to sniff all illegal arms out and prevent them from getting in the hands of criminals.

Emmanuel says using technology will significantly assist the Department in meeting its mandate: “Initiatives such as automated systems, electronic processes for cargo clearance, and efficient risk management are essential to reduce delays and to enhance the movement of goods across borders.”

Saint Lucia’s porous borders also contribute to the illegal entry of arms into the country.
