The Senate will meet on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, to discuss key amendments to the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act. Papers will be laid by the Honorable Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information. The session will begin at 10:00 a.m.
The Senate will consider several motions. One motion seeks to amend Schedule 3 of the VAT Act to include goods and services supplied by the Saint Lucia National Trust as exempt from VAT.
Another motion proposes to amend Schedule 1 of the VAT Act. This would impact zero-rated goods such as water pumps, tanks, and various appliances. Specific items include plastic water tanks, pressure-reducing valves, and fittings.
In addition, another motion aims to exempt personal items, food, and toys contained in barrels. This exemption would apply from November 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025. Toys, food, and care packages by elected parliamentarians would also be exempt during this period.
Three bills will also be considered during the session. These include amendments to the Money Laundering Prevention Act, the Criminal Code, and the Supreme Court Act.
