The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has reported a surge in Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases across Saint Lucia. The illness, commonly affecting children under five, is now spreading to older children and adults.
Call for Heightened Hygiene
In response, the Ministry has urged the public to adopt stricter hygiene practices. Officials stress that frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals are key to controlling the outbreak.
Dr. Harani Vemula, Medical Surveillance Officer, highlighted the importance of community awareness. “While HFMD is usually mild, it is highly contagious. We must take preventive measures to protect vulnerable groups,” Vemula said.
Prevention Measures
To curb the spread, the Ministry recommends:
- Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after diaper changes or restroom use.
- Avoiding touching the face with unwashed hands.
- Keeping distance from those showing symptoms of HFMD.
- Regularly disinfecting surfaces such as toys, door handles, and countertops.
Parents and caregivers are urged to closely monitor children and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or a high fever develops. With no vaccine available, community cooperation is crucial in managing the outbreak.
Monitoring and Public Safety
Dr. Vemula emphasized that early detection and prompt management can prevent severe cases. “The Ministry is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed,” Vemula stated. The Ministry encourages continued vigilance and adherence to health guidelines.
