Health Division Launches Mosquito Control Plan as Dengue Looms

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has stepped up mosquito control efforts in response to concerns about a potential dengue fever outbreak. At this time, the control efforts focus on targeted interventions to protect public health.

Public Participation Key to Success

Environmental Health Officer Glenda Cepal-Etienne from the Vector Control Unit emphasized the importance of these measures in reducing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Further, she stressed that public participation is crucial in ensuring the success of the initiative.

Multi-Faceted Approach to Mosquito Control

“Since the launch of our comprehensive vector awareness campaign in July 2024, we have implemented a multi-faceted approach aimed at minimizing the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases. Our house-to-house inspections continue to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds in communities around the island. Additionally, abandoned or open water sources are being treated, and ongoing education campaigns target groups with vital information on how to control vectors within homes,” said Cepal-Etienne.

Key Areas of Focus in Mosquito Control

The Ministry’s plan covers several key areas, including house-to-house inspections to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. It includes identifying and treating water sources to reduce potential breeding sites and educating the public on mosquito breeding habits. Moreover, fogging operations target schools and communities, while cleanup initiatives aim to remove items that hold stagnant water and attract mosquitos and rats.

Public Urged to Take Action

Etienne further addressed the need for public involvement in combating dengue fever, encouraging residents to take immediate actions in their homes.

“While fogging helps reduce the adult mosquito population, it does not address the larvae, which can develop into new generations of mosquitoes within days. We urge everyone to take responsibility by eliminating standing water and scrubbing containers to dislodge mosquito eggs.”

Schools Prepared for Safe Reopening

The Ministry has already assessed and fogged schools to create safer environments for students and staff ahead of their reopening.

“We are preparing schools to ensure a mosquito-safe environment as children return for the new academic year. After-school interventions, including community-wide fogging, will focus on areas with high mosquito indices to prevent the further spread of the disease,” added Cepal-Etienne.

Call for Community Involvement

Importantly, the Ministry urges citizens to be proactive in safeguarding their homes and communities by following mosquito control practices and staying informed about prevention efforts.
