Young Boxer Brings St Lucia Two Silver Medals

Young St Lucian Boxer Nervon Mederick earned two silver medals at the recent Winfield Braithwaite Schoolboys Tournament in Guyana.

After an electrifying first bout on Saturday, he was requested to fight again and stepped up on the final night. His double-silver win adds to the growing popular phrase that St Lucia excels ‘in twos’ with two Nobel Laureates, two Pitons, two Olympic Medals, and now, two Boxing Medals!

Mederick, part of St Lucia’s youngest-ever boxing team and student of the Morne Du Don Primary School, competed in the 11-12 26kg final against Kevin Klass of Guyana. Klass secured the win. But despite the loss, Mederick’s performance also contributed to St Lucia’s overall third-place finish at the tournament.

Guyana claimed their seventh consecutive title with 38 points. Trinidad and Tobago followed with 29 points, while St Lucia earned 13 points.

Proud St Lucians took to Facebook to congratulate the young boxer, “Well done, Nervon. We at the Morne Du Don School are so very proud of you,” exclaimed Jacinta Auguste. Another, Simie Dani Gustav, added “Congratulations little one, great job!”

The SLBA undoubtedly chose well in its decision to field promising young boxers like Nervon Mederick and his teammates. St Lucians have great expectations for the future of these young athletes.
