A family in Mongouge is mourning the loss of Bernard Joseph, 34, who was shot and killed trying to stop a robbery near his home. The incident occurred around 8.p.m last night.
Joseph’s mother, Marilyn Eugune Constantine, said her son rushed to help a neighbor whose store was being robbed, despite their strained relationship. “He did the right thing by trying to save her life,” she said.
Constantine described Joseph as a quiet person who became troublesome when drinking. Our source reported Constantine as saying “He was a good boy for me. When he had no alcohol in his system, he is quiet and goes to bed early.”
Joseph, who worked at a hotel, was known for sharing food with friends on Sundays. After visiting the scene, Constantine said dipping her hands in her son’s blood brought her some comfort. “Carrying his blood makes me feel a bit better. I feel like he is with me,” she said.
Joseph’s brother, Joshua Earneil Joseph, said he’s struggling to process the loss. A community member and Joseph’s drinking partner said he is devastated. The robbery victim declined to comment.
