The opposition party United Workers Party (UWP) has launched a petition in an effort to have Speaker of The House Claudius Francis resign.
On Thursday 18th May, 2023 the party urged the public to sign the newly launched petition.
“Dear fellow citizens of Saint Lucia,
We, the undersigned, are calling for the immediate resignation of Claudius Francis as the Speaker of Saint Lucia’s parliament. Mr. Francis’s biased decisions have cost the state money and put the interests of the Saint Lucia Labour Party ahead of the welfare of the people.
As Speaker of the House, Mr. Francis is expected to be impartial and fair in his rulings. However, his actions have shown otherwise. He has shown a clear bias towards the SLP, which has led to decisions that are detrimental to democracy and the state’s financial health.
We cannot afford to have someone in a position of power who is more interested in serving their own interests and that of their party than those of the people they represent. We need a Speaker of the House who is committed to upholding the principles of democracy and fairness, and who will work to promote the best interests of the state and its citizens.
We call on all citizens who believe in democracy and fairness to join us in demanding the resignation of Claudius Francis as the Speaker of Saint Lucia’s parliament. Only then can we begin to restore faith in our democratic institutions and move forward as a united and prosperous nation.” they wrote.
This comes following a court hearing between opposition leader Allen Chastanet against Speaker of the House Claudius Francis for the suspension of the leader in the House of Assembly.
The court hearing has since been adjourned with it being concluded that Chastanet will return to the next and any subsequent sittings of the house.
At a recent press briefing, the Micoud South MP states the voice of the people is needed to cause the speaker of the house to resign as he has shown he has no intentions to do it on his own.
“It’s going to take the people’s voice to answer your question, to cause Claudius Francis to resign. He’s not going to do it, he’s shown he’s not going to put country above self.” he stated.
