Pierre Shares Labor Day Message On Workers Rights And Livable Wages

On Monday May 1st, 2023 marked Labor Day.  Prime Minister Hon. Philip J Pierre took to his Facebook account to highlight the topic of workers’ rights and livable wages.

“As we celebrate Labour Day, I also had the opportunity to reflect on the opportunities that we have created to better the lives of families and impact the course of future generations. Whatever we do, must, in a positive way ensure that our children can live in and inherit a thriving nation.

Let us continue to be guided and inspired by the philosophy and values of the founding fathers of our great party- the Saint Lucia Labour Party – to open doors of opportunity for every Saint Lucian, irrespective of their social and economic standing in the society. Our party originated from the bosom of the labour movement and has consistently served the best interest of the workers in this country.

We must continue to build a society where free enterprise can flourish. And that the rights of workers are protected, and they can get a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work. We must build a society where meritocracy and inclusion are valued and embraced as basic principles for progress and development, for generations to come.

To ensure equality and fairness, the Minimum & Equal Wage Commission is currently formulating a liveable wage for workers in Saint Lucia. All sectors including the private sector will be consulted, and an appropriate announcement will be made soon.

On this Labour Day, let us come together to honour the contributions and renew our commitment to creating a brighter future for all.

Thank you, and happy Labour Day.” he shared.

Last month it was announced by the minister for labor Virginia Albert-Poyotte that a minimum wage commission established six months prior is finalizing a minimum wage report to be presented to the cabinet.
