Saint Lucia Labor Party Hosts Annual Conference of Delegates

The Saint Lucia Labor Party (SLP) convened its 2024 Conference of Delegates, led by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, with special guest Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. In a rousing address, Pierre celebrated the party’s progress while emphasizing the need for continued unity and action.

“We are now in the first quarter of our fourth year in government,” Pierre declared. “Since coming into government, we have made significant progress, changing the social and economic landscape of the country, but there is still more work to be done.” He urged his party members to stay the course and not become complacent. “While it may be a good time to reflect on our achievements, it is not the time to rest.”

Economic Gains and the Road Ahead

Pierre highlighted the government’s accomplishments in stabilizing Saint Lucia’s economy, stating, “We have made significant strides in stabilizing and growing the economy. Figures do not lie.” However, he cautioned against overconfidence. “The citizens of Saint Lucia are depending on us. We must remain in government for the people.”

He contrasted the Labor Party’s efforts with others, remarking, “Others want to be there for themselves, their friends, and their family. We must not allow that.”

Labor Party Solidarity with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Prime Minister Gonsalves, invited as a guest speaker, delivered a passionate address in support of the SLP and emphasized the strong bond between the Labor movements in Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent. “The unity of the Labor Party and its predecessor, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Labor Party, has had strong fraternal links with the Saint Lucia Labor Party from the earliest days,” he said.

Gonsalves also spoke of the broader Caribbean struggles, focusing on the region’s vulnerabilities due to climate change and global conflicts. “We are small island developing states with inherent vulnerabilities,” he noted, pointing to the unfair treatment of small nations in the global political economy.

The Fight for Reparations and Continued Progress

Gonsalves passionately advocated for reparations, citing the region’s history of enslavement and colonization. “For the native genocide and the enslavement of African peoples committed by European nations, we demand reparations,” he said, highlighting the enduring legacy of colonialism.

He also called for continued resistance against imperialism, urging Labor Party members to unite for a common cause. “We can only fight this battle if the progressive forces are united,” Gonsalves emphasized. He encouraged the audience to maintain their struggle for sustainable development and a more just world order.

Looking Forward

The conference concluded with renewed calls for unity and determination in facing the challenges ahead. Both Prime Ministers echoed the sentiment that Labor governments must continue to prioritize the needs of their people.

Pierre closed with a message of resilience, stating, “We cannot turn back. We have to go forward.” Gonsalves, reflecting on his decades in politics, added, “I’ve been a rebel for 56 years, and I ain’t done yet.”

The 2024 SLP Conference of Delegates reaffirmed the party’s commitment to social progress, regional solidarity, and continued governance in the best interest of the people of Saint Lucia.
