PM Pierre lauds launch of Marchand Playing Fields Project

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC), through its Universal Service Fund (USF) office, has launched the Marchand Playing Fields Project. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by providing free high-speed internet access to the Marchand Community Center, two major sporting facilities, and nearby residential areas.

Prime Minister and Castries East Member of Parliament, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, emphasized the significance of the project. “The Mindoo Phillip Park and Marchand Grounds—legendary spaces in Saint Lucian sports—have been anchors for sports and youth development,” he said. The new Wi-Fi access, he added, will enable athletes, residents, and visitors to engage in online learning, e-sports, and real-time coaching resources that can enhance their potential.

Thanks to a five-year partnership between the NTRC and Cable & Wireless Communications (FLOW), the project provides digital connectivity to the community. The enhanced access will empower more success stories from these facilities.

Key partners in the initiative include Sports Saint Lucia Inc (SSI), NTRC/USF, and Cable and Wireless Saint Lucia (FLOW).

At the launch event, Hon. Kenson Casimir, Minister for Youth Development and Sports, and Hon. Stephenson King, Senior Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using technology to support community development.

Prime Minister Pierre concluded by noting that the Wi-Fi project at the Marchand Playing Fields represents a critical step in the government’s effort to create an inclusive digital economy.
