CARICOM Chairman and Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell is urging Caribbean citizens to stay alert amid the mpox outbreak. The recent outbreak has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
Mitchell announced that the CARICOM Secretariat will work with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to ensure a coordinated regional and international response. He emphasized that CARPHA, in collaboration with CARICOM IMPACS, will monitor incoming passengers and facilitate the rapid identification of potential mpox cases. Regular updates on the situation will be provided as more information becomes available.
Although no cases of mpox clade 1b have been reported in the Caribbean, Mitchell stressed the need for enhanced surveillance to protect public health. He urged citizens to stay informed through updates from CARPHA and local health authorities, and to be vigilant for unusual rashes or lesions. Precaution is particularly advised if citizens have travelled to areas with reported mpox cases. Immediate medical attention should be sought if symptoms are detected.
Mitchell also highlighted the commitment of regional governments to strengthen health ministries, ensuring effective surveillance and public awareness strategies to enhance the region’s preparedness against mpox.
