Heat Wave Warning Issued For Saint Lucia

The Saint Lucia Meteorology Services has issued a heat wave warning for Saint Lucia.

The public is advised to practice caution by avoiding direct sunlight during periods of increased heat levels and to remain hydrated.

The heat wave is said to be caused by El Niño which is the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, which causes high temperatures.

The public is at risk of dehydration and its related effects which includes dizziness and fainting spells.

School officials are asked to ensure students drink water during the day and limit outdoor activity in direct sunlight during this time.

Saint Lucia Meteorology Services Advisory To The Public

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs notes the recent warning from the St. Lucia Meteorology Services in relation to the potential record-high temperatures. The Ministry cautions everyone on the need to remain hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during the period of increased heat levels.  Officials from the Met Services Department have confirmed that this weather is due to El Nino, causing record-breaking high temperatures, sweltering heat and dry winds. Collectively, these factors place the public at risk of dehydration and its related effects which include dizziness and fainting spells.

To avoid the detrimental effects of heat waves, the Ministry of Health advises the public to avoid exposure to direct sunlight, particularly between the hours of 11:00 am and 2:00 pm and to regularly drink water. It should be noted that sugar-laden drinks are not a substitute for water as they contribute to further dehydration. These guidelines are particularly important for the elderly and young who tend to be most easily affected by extreme heat. People living with Diabetes and other chronic diseases are also urged to take the precautions indicated during this time.

The Ministry of Health advises school officials to ensure students drink water during the day and limit outdoor activity in the direct sunlight during this time.

Adults are advised to limit alcohol consumption during outdoor activities and increase water intake during physical activity. Ensure that hats, cool and light colored protective clothing and sunblock are used to reduce the impact of the heat.
