Residents of Rodney Bay have threatened to take legal action in response to noise pollution from local bars and restaurants in the area.
In a letter written to the authorities by the residents they state the noise pollution in Rodney Bay is causing damage to the health of residents and it is beginning to affect them financially as well.
“It has become a major concern as it causes great damage to the health of the residents and has started affecting us financially as well. Due to noise pollution residents are unable to rent out their condos, Air BnB’s and suffer loss of sleep.” they stated.
Residents say that many of them have lived in Rodney Bay for over 15-30 years and have never experienced such nuisance.
“ Please note that some residents have lived in the area for 30+, 15+ years and never experienced such nuisance.
This noise pollution is currently affecting:
• The working efficiency of adults in the area
• The concentration of young children in school
• Elderly people as they are complaining of heart palpitations and hearing issues
• Residents have also complained of behavior changes, anxiety, and one resident complained of having thoughts of suicide due to sleep deprivation”
They state that residents who operate businesses geared toward accommodation are losing clients and are dealing with bad reviews from previous clients due to the noise.
“Residents who operate businesses in the area that are geared towards accommodation for tourists have had to refund money because the guests couldn’t sleep. They are also faced with bad reviews from guests – advising other travelers to look elsewhere for lodging due to the noise.
Long term rental landlords in the area for locals and expats, have been advised that tenants will not be renewing their leases due to the torture of sleep deprivation and intolerable noise.”
The residents are urging the authorities to take swift control and enforce strict laws against noise pollution in Rodney Bay.
“We urge the authorities to enforce strict noise control laws in Rodney Bay, and to have compassion for the residents in the area who are currently suffering. The use of loudspeakers – especially subwoofers, as the bass rumbles throughout the community should be controlled so that we may all co-exist peacefully. Furthermore, to reduce noise pollution in Rodney bay, authorities also require public cooperation. Hence, the public should be made aware of the threats posed by noise pollution.
Lastly, I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate action against this issue which affects the resident population of Rodney Bay.” they stated.
