On Tuesday 30th May, 2023 Supporters of the opposition leader Allen Chastanet and his party United Workers Party (UWP) rallied and walked alongside the Micoud South MP to the sitting of the House of Parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a press conference held on Wednesday 17th May, 2023 the leader urged his party supporters to come out in numbers to walk with him as he says the voice of the people is needed to cause the speaker of the house to resign as he has shown he has no intentions to do it on his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supporters came out in numbers and in turn the MP says the walk for democracy was a success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Tuesday the opposition leader took to his social media account to thank his supporters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who came out this morning to support our Walk for Democracy. Your presence and unwavering commitment to the cause have made a significant impact and have reaffirmed my belief in the power of collective action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your participation in the walk has sent a strong message that democracy matters, and together, we stand united in defending its principles. Your passion, enthusiasm, and dedication have inspired us all and given us the strength to continue advocating for a fair and just society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As we reflect on the success of the Walk for Democracy, let us remember that our work does not end here. The journey towards a more inclusive and participatory democracy continues, and we will need your continued support and involvement in the days ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once again, thank you for standing up for democracy and for being a vital part of our movement. Together, we will strive to create a society where every voice is heard and where justice prevails.\u201d He shared.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Ernest Hilaire says the walk and gathering of supporters outside the House of Parliament are an exact representation of the current democracy the island holds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says under the last administration persons were prohibited from coming within a hundred meters of the House of Parliament. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRemember under the last government there were barricades preventing people from even coming within a hundred meters of parliament.\u201d he recounted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA match that is supposed to be against democracy in Saint Lucia, there are people right outside parliament demonstrating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is supposed to be a walk for democracy And you\u2019re outside in parliament yard expressing your views. There cannot be a bigger expression of democracy than this.\u201d Hilaire stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
